Plymouth Youth Sailing

Our aim is to utilize Plymouth's largest natural asset for young people, Plymouth Sound.

We are a young peoples water sports club providing competency, safety, supervision, social activities & for those who wish to take the sport further, development into racing & seamanship skills. Staffing is provided through assistance from volunteer adults & full time staff, but in time should be substantially managed by the membership themselves.

The focus of activity is towards junior & youth from the Sport England Priority Initiative Wards of inner city Plymouth.

South African Sailing

Sailing is the art of controlling a boat without an engine and nothing but the wind for power. The wind is caught in large (usually fabric) foils called sails thus driving the boat forward. By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel (or centre board) a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails. This is done in order to set both the direction and speed of a boat.

The skills required to master the art of sailing include experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as a thorough knowledge of sailboats themselves.
